Alcohol Monitoring Options

Alcohol Testing Technologies for Monitoring and Maintaining Sobriety

Committing to sobriety can be difficult.  It usually involves a complete change of lifestyle.  For some people, it takes being held accountable to their sobriety in order to make the life change.  There are options available for anyone who wishes to get help with alcohol addiction or dependence.  There are a number of different types of alcohol monitors, from breathalyzers to ankle bracelets.  No matter what, if you believe that you or someone you love is suffering from alcohol use disorder you need to get help.

Breathalyzers

One of the most common kinds of alcohol monitors is a breathalyzer.  Today, breathalyzers are usually handheld devices that are blown into and register a person’s breath alcohol concentration.  The technology is so advanced that a portable breath testing machine may now be equipped with facial recognition.

Ankle Bracelets

Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM CAM) devices are worn on the ankle and provide 24/7 monitoring.  They work by testing the sweat that is naturally excreted from your ankle to determine if you have consumed alcohol.

Ignition Interlock Devices (IID)

An ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer that is installed on your vehicle.  It will not let you start your car if alcohol is detected in your breath.

There are other options available for at home alcohol monitoring as well.  For instance, you can use over-the-counter urine and saliva tests to determine the presence of alcohol.  While some of these monitors may be court ordered because of an alcohol-related conviction, they are all available to the public.  The most important thing to remember is that there are options for someone suffering from alcohol dependence.  Sobriety is not something that happens overnight, but it can be achieved.
