Avoiding Alcohol During Stressful Times

As coronavirus sweeps the nation and more states order residents to “shelter in place,” stress and anxiety can become overwhelming. For nearly everyone, the coronavirus has meant a complete change to normal life. Whether it has stopped you from being able to get together with friends, go to the movies, or even go to work, it can weigh heavy. Unfortunately, during times like this there is an increase in substance use. Alcohol and drugs are all too often used to mask feelings of fear and anxiety. The important thing is to remember that we are all in this together and there are other ways to cope without turning to drugs and alcohol.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a number of ways to help you cope with the stress related to the COVID-19 outbreak. These include:

  • Limiting the amount of news coverage related to the coronavirus
  • Eating healthy and drinking plenty of water
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs
  • Find other things that you enjoy
  • Make sure to stay connected with friends and family
  • Meditate

Stress can lead to insomnia, sudden weight loss or weight gain, and depression. It is important to get help immediately if you feel overwhelmed.
