Holiday Challenges for those Recovering from Alcohol Addiction

Setting Realistic Goals for Your Sobriety This Holiday Season

With Christmas only weeks away, many families are gearing up for festivities.  The holidays can be a joyous time, but it can also be very stressful.  Over the last few weeks of the year, there is an influx of visitors, get-togethers and temptation for those recovering from addiction.  Relapse is common during the holidays.  Common triggers include stress, proximity and access to alcohol, anxiety and depression.  All of these are common around the holiday season regardless of whether you are in recovery or struggling with a dependence on alcohol.  It is important to understand your triggers, being open and honest with your loved ones and your support team.

Those in early recovery from addiction often have the hardest time preventing relapse during the holidays.  It is important to set realistic goals and to always plan ahead.  Many times, people are unaware of how a pre-dinner holiday toast may be an unhealthy choice for someone in recovery.  Make sure that you know your surroundings and the people that you are with if you attend a holiday gathering.  Always plan an easy escape if you feel uncomfortable and avoid situations that you know will be centered around alcohol.

Make sure that you don’t isolate yourself completely.  Feelings of isolation can also be a trigger.  Preventing relapse is about understanding the motivation behind your drinking.  Always know your limits and make the choice that is best for you where you are in your recovery.  Your loved ones will understand.

If you are struggling with alcohol addiction, there are options for treatment.  Now is the time to get help.  Consider making the call today and getting the help you need.
