Local Law Enforcement Teams Up Labor Day Weekend

Police Departments in Orange County Are Working Together to Fight Impaired Driving

 

According to a press release issued by the Seal Beach Police Department and published in the Orange County Breeze, the Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach Police Departments are teaming up to stop street racing, speeding, and impaired driving this Labor Day Weekend. The collaborative effort by local law enforcement is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Funding for the Collaborative Traffic Enforcement and DUI Enforcement is partly provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also noted on a similar release on the Huntington Beach Police Department Facebook page.

According to the release, all three agencies have seen an increase in illegal activity such as impaired driving, speeding, and street racing. This concerted effort will put officers from the different agencies throughout the area. In addition to increased patrols, Huntington Beach Police Department hosted a DUI checkpoint on Friday, September 4 with the assistance of the Seal Beach Police Department.

The agencies remind motorists that impaired driving does not pertain only to alcohol. Impaired driving can also include, but is not limited to “prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or marijuana.” Over 700 arrests were made for driving under the influence by the California Highway Patrol over the July 4th holiday.

Throughout Southern California, and across the state, motorists will see an increase in saturation patrols and DUI enforcement helping to combat impaired driving and other illegal activity this Labor Day Weekend. While Labor Day, as with everything else, may look a little different this year, it is still important to remember to never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
