Maintaining Sobriety During Halloween

Tips and Tricks for those in Recovery This Halloween

Halloween was once a holiday dedicated to candy and costumes, today it has become one of the biggest drinking days of the year.  For those in recovery, Halloween can present some difficulties.  At every corner is a place advertising an alcohol-infused evening or a house party where alcohol is one of the main beverages.  Preventing relapse during these times can be overwhelming, but it is achievable.  With some planning and understanding of your specific triggers you can get through this and other holidays without any issue.

Tip 1: Find a Sober Halloween Event.  Halloween does not have to be all about booze.  Many places and organizations gear their Halloween festivities to children.  Few people get the day after Halloween off from work, so many places recognize that a hangover is not ideal.  Haunted Houses and amusement parks usually have separated alcohol areas, so that it is not a main attraction.  If you love the spook factor, find a fun haunted attraction.

Tip 2: B.Y.O.  If you do plan to attend a party where you know alcohol will be served, be sure to bring your own non-alcoholic drink.  Make sure you have an exit plan in case you feel uncomfortable and find comfort in friends and family that support you in your recovery.

Tip 3: Scary Movies.  Whether you want to go to the movie theater or host a scary movie event at your house.  Scary movies are a great way to ring in the night without having to be around alcohol.

Tip 4: Volunteer.  Churches and youth shelters across the country regularly host trick-or-treat events for underprivileged youth.  Consider getting involved and helping make the night of a child.

Tip 5: Know your limits.  Regardless of what you choose, know your limits.  If you are newly sober do not push it.  There is no reason you have to go to a club event or to the local bar to experience Halloween night.  Keep busy and do something that makes you happy whether it is fright-filled or not.
