Mental Health During the Pandemic

Studies Show Anxiety and Depression Have Drastically Increased Amid COVID-19

A recent study discussed in the Denver Post shows that the rate of people experiencing anxiety and depression has substantially increased during the pandemic. According to the article, Mental Health America reports a “93% increase in people participating in anxiety screenings.” Additionally, the nonprofit found a 62% increase in depression screenings compared to 2019.

Hundreds of thousands of people are seeking screening for these mental health disorders. Things like isolation, unemployment, and future uncertainty may be playing a role in the increase in the number of people experiencing anxiety and depression. Researchers fear a disturbing trend that may indicate a crisis brewing as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis.

As we’ve previously discussed, millions of adults suffer from diagnosable mental health and substance use disorders, but few seek treatment. The results can be devastating, particularly with severe cases of depression that lead to high rates of suicidal ideation.

Another area that gets little discussion is how mental health issues can affect individuals in the criminal justice system. California, in recognizing that mental health may play an underlying role in certain crimes, announced its commitment to mental health diversion programs.

Mental health diversion allows for individuals who are diagnosed with certain disorders identified in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders to have their case dismissed if they participate and complete treatment. Certain criteria must be met in order to qualify.
