Careers that May be More Likely to Lead to Alcohol Addiction

According to Business Insider, there are a number of professions that have higher rates of alcoholism. Their reporting indicates that the top 5 positions where people are more likely to die from alcoholism are:

  • Bartenders
  • Shoe machine operators
  • Roofers
  • Painters
  • Cooks

Other professions with higher than average rates of fatalities from alcoholism include garbage collectors, advertisers, carpet installers, gardeners, surveyors, farmers, amusement park attendants, concrete finishers, musicians, drywall installers, construction laborers and sailors. The article was based on a review of millions of death certificates “compiled by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. As noted in the article, they “focused on white men because they represented by far the largest data set.”

While a number of professions had a higher than average alcohol-related mortality rate, Business Insider notes that “Bartenders are 2.33 times more likely to die from alcoholism than average.”

The most recent data available suggests that there were 22,246 alcohol liver disease deaths and 35,823 alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides in a single year.
