Pandemic Got You Down? Try These Mood-Boosters to Beat the COVID-19 Blues
Almost one year into the pandemic and many of us are still in some form of isolation. Whether it is self-imposed quarantine to keep friends and family safe or a mandatory stay-at-home order issued by the governor, most people are feeling a bit of cabin fever.
Recent studies have shown that Americans have turned to alcohol to cure their pandemic blues. Alcohol sales soared last year causing concern that the health crisis could create a substantial rise in substance use disorders.
If you are looking for ways to enhance your mood during the pandemic, consider these six non-alcohol related options.
1. Workout
Exercise is a natural mood enhancer. Whether you decide to take up jogging or join an online Zumba class, any movement will benefit you in the long run.
2. Go Outdoors
The great outdoors is called the great outdoors for a reason. The coronavirus spreads most easily indoors in poorly ventilated rooms with unmasked people talking, singing, shouting, or eating. Reduce your chances of catching it by going outdoors. Find nearby hiking trails or simply enjoy the sunshine.
3. Plan an At-home Spa Day
Draw a bubble bath, put on your favorite charcoal mask and curl up with a good book. There is no reason that you have to spend hundreds of dollars on a day pass for a spa that is probably closed anyway.
4. Try an Online Cooking Class
You can pay for one with a celebrity chef or you can find ones for free, but online cooking classes are a great way to kill time and get something out of it. Try these suggestions from The Spruce Eats.
5. Schedule Zoom Calls
Schedule zoom calls each week, or every day for that matter, with friends and family. Stay connected through technology. Commit to it each week so that you stay in touch and do not lose connection with those you love.
6. Take Up a New Hobby
Amazon has made staying at home a little easier. 2-day delivery makes ordering things online almost as good as going to the store. If you are up for a challenge, order a crochet kit or a paint-by-numbers. Try doing something you never have before or go back to basics with a fun jigsaw puzzle.
