2021 New Year’s Resolutions

Why Not Drinking May Top the List in the New Year

New Year’s Eve is here and many people have already begun to think about resolutions for 2021. According to YouGov, the top New Year’s Resolutions of 2019 were:

  • Exercise more
  • Save money
  • Eat more healthily
  • Lose weight
  • Reduce stress
  • Get more sleep
  • Stick to a budget
  • Focus on spiritual growth
  • Travel more
  • Learn a new skill

This year, some speculate that a new resolution may top the list: drink less or stop drinking altogether. With gyms closed and travel restrictions imposed around the world, some of the most common resolutions may be lower on the list this year. Match that with the fact that alcohol sales and consumption skyrocketed during the pandemic and you have a climate ripe for a “new” New Year’s Resolution.

Committing to sobriety or drinking less is actually nothing new for the New Year. Dry January has gained popularity worldwide encouraging people to give up drinking for the entire month of January. According to an article by Chronicle Live, a revealing 475,000 people in the North East UK plan to participate in the challenge.

Many people surveyed (27%) indicated that they would like to cut down on their alcohol consumption in the coming year and a whopping 6.5 million across the country stated that they would be willing to participate in Dry January. This number is up from 3.9 million the previous year.

Quitting alcohol can have a number of benefits to your overall health. If you are unable to quit on your own, seek treatment now and start 2021 in a new direction.
