2020 Has Been Plagued with Anxiety Over the Pandemic, So How Can You Cope During the Holidays?
The holidays are stressful enough without a global pandemic adding to everyone’s anxiety. Now, instead of worrying about how you are going to get to the inlaws on Christmas Eve, Aunt Jolie’s on Christmas Day, and still have time to see your parents, you have to worry about who has been where and whether they have been quarantining.
Multiple studies have concluded that Americans have been consuming more alcohol during the pandemic. It is also well-documented that people tend to drink more during the holidays. So, what are the best ways to cope with the stress and anxiety that these holidays will bring?
Consider these three coping mechanisms for celebrating this season:
Physical Activity. Getting exercise can have numerous beneficial effects. It can help you maintain a healthy weight, release endorphins, help with feelings of depression, and may naturally help you manage your stress. Plus, outdoor activities such as walking or running can be COVID-friendly – a win-win this holiday season.
Stay Connected. Depending on where you live or your health situation, you may be in some degree of lockdown, but quarantining doesn’t have to mean isolation. There are numerous ways to stay connected, whether you schedule a family zoom, call up a friend on facetime, or download a social app like House Party.
Avoid Triggers. Many people use alcohol to cope with stressful situations, and 2020 seems to have endless stressors that pile on one after the other. If you have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol or drugs, avoid triggers. This may mean not calling into that virtual happy hour hosted by your office or staying away from parties and bars (which may be against COVID rules anyway).
As with everything else this year, the holidays will be unlike any other. Stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy the season. A new year is rapidly approaching, which will hopefully bring many welcome changes.
