Finding Healthy Alternatives to Alcoholic Beverages
Summer is in full swing. That means barbeques, swimming pool fun and for many people recovering from alcohol addiction, temptation at every turn. Nearly every social setting may present triggers for different people and the frequency of summer get-togethers puts the risk at the forefront. Depending on your stage of recovery, it may be best to sit out a few parties that you know will be centered around alcohol. If you are ready to be in social situations where there may be alcohol present, you can choose a number of alternatives including club soda, fresh squeezed juices, a variety of different teas or even just plain water. Increasing your water intake is beneficial for any person.
Another great way to abstain from alcohol consumption is to find a sober buddy. Whether it is someone else in recovery, a sponsor or simply someone who doesn’t drink for health reasons, you would be surprised at the number of people that are willing to remain sober. Pregnant women are a great resource as they are generally committed to sobriety throughout their pregnancy and have found a number of alternatives to alcohol.
If you choose to avoid alcohol-centric parties, you can easily find stimulating activities that do not involve drinking. Walking, jogging and hiking are great activities to engage in. Exercise can help your overall wellbeing, alleviating feelings of anxiety, stress and depression. Consider joining a group sport such as adult soccer or volleyball. Most cities have leagues of every level that are low-cost to join. Most league sporting venues are alcohol-free.
Finally, it is important to remember that no matter which alcohol alternative you choose, you need to know your limits. Avoid known triggers whether it be people, places or things. It may be hard at first, but your loved ones will understand.
