One of the biggest drinking days of the year is just weeks away. The Fourth of July means that summer is in full swing. Most kids are out of school, the days are longer and warmer and barbeques are on everyone’s mind. Unfortunately, the Fourth of July also sees a dramatic increase in the number of people who binge drink. The summer holiday is one of the deadliest on the road according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Millions of people travel on the 3rd and 4th of July making the roads more congested. In addition, most holiday parties serve alcohol late into the evening to account for nighttime fireworks. This makes for a deadly combination resulting in numerous fatalities every year.
For some, the Fourth of July parties and other summer celebrations are unhealthy environments. They often promote drinking in excess with readily accessible alcohol. For a person in recovery, these events may serve as triggers and the temptation may be too great to overcome. If that is the situation, it is best to avoid these types of activities altogether. There are many alcohol and drug free events to attend across the country.
Heavy drinking and binge drinking, which are prevalent during the summer season can have serious consequences. Not only are you putting your health at risk but you could be endangering those around you if you choose to drink and drive. It simply is not worth the risk. Summer celebrations do not have to be alcohol-centric. If you believe that you have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, the first thing you should do is seek treatment. It is best to enter into treatment as early as possible.
