United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime World Drug Report
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) World Drug Report 2020 global drug use is rising. Nearly 270 million people worldwide reportedly used drugs in 2018. That number represents a 30% increase compared to 2009. Additionally, over 35 million people have a diagnosable drug use disorder.
It is believed that the pandemic likely affected drug markets worldwide and may have further increased the number of people that use drugs. Unfortunately, the pandemic caused a rise in unemployment and fewer opportunities for individuals in the hardest hit countries.
Cannabis Use Across the Globe
Cannabis continues to be the most widely used substance across the world. According to the UNODC, approximately 192 million people used cannabis throughout the globe in 2018. While many jurisdictions have legalized marijuana use, it still accounted for over half of drug offense cases between 2014 and 2018.
Opioid Use Worldwide
Opioids are one of the most harmful substances used around the world and their use has continued to increase. As reported by the UNODC, opioid-related deaths increased 71%. The rise disproportionately affected women with a 92% increase compared to 63%.
Cocaine Supply Increase
There has been an increase in the supply of cocaine to Europe as a result of a more efficient supply chain. The purity has increased 40% and there are more organized crime groups providing more cocaine to Europeans.
Seeking Treatment
Individuals with a substance use or drug disorder are strongly encouraged to seek treatment. The vast majority of those with a diagnosable drug use disorder never seek treatment. There are more options than ever for treatment.
