New York Senate Minority Leader to Seek Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Alcohol addiction afflicts people from every corner of the nation.  There is no demographic untouched by addiction or dependence.  Seeking treatment takes courage and determination.  New York State Senate Minority Leader John Flanagan announced today that he will miss the start of the new legislative session to tend to his own alcohol dependency.  According to a released statement he will return to work after completing a “thorough rehabilitation and recovery program.”

The news comes after a previous acknowledgement about his dependency.  Flanagan revealed in August 2017 that he had undergone treatment for alcohol addiction.  The candidness about his struggles may serve as an example for others who hide underlying dependencies on drugs and alcohol.

Flanagan was first elected to the New York State Assembly, later moving to the Senate becoming majority leader.  Most recently, Flanagan defeated his democratic opponent in the November 2018 election.  He represents the 2nd Senate District of New York.  The Republican Senator announced that Deputy Minority Leader Senator Griffo will serve in his place.

If you or someone you know is suffering from alcohol addiction, getting help is only a phone call away.  Today nearly everyone has been affected by alcohol or drug addiction in one way or another.  The stigma around getting help has been released.  Support from places high and low is available.  Colleagues of the senator have released positive statements wishing the senator a healthy return to the legislature.
