Relaxing Without Alcohol

Tips and Tricks for Unwinding Without Having a Drink

Alcohol can be an easy go-to after a stressful day at work or as a way to unwind once extended family returns home after the holidays. Unfortunately, even moderate amounts of alcohol can have a deep impact on a person’s physical and mental health.

If you are struggling to find ways to relax without having a drink, consider these tips and tricks:

  • Go for a walk. Get outdoors and consider a walk or light jog. Fresh air can do a lot to calm your senses and your mood. If you are a single parent with young kids, get the whole crew out and about with a quick walk around the neighborhood. Children often feed off of a parent’s stress, so they may need coping mechanisms as much as you do.
  • Create your own spa. Both men and women can use a good spa day but maybe a luxurious massage and facial is out of your price range. Create your own spa at home with a bath bomb and sugar scrub. A warm bath can calm you down and help you transition from work to home or just give you the 30 minutes you need to unwind.
  • Consider meditation. Breathing exercises can help relieve stress and anxiety in a matter of minutes. There are free or very affordable apps that can teach you calming breathing techniques.
  • Lean on your support system. Your friends and family are there to support you when you need it most. Call or zoom with those you trust can put you in a better mentality if you are struggling.

Finally, if you are having a hard time relaxing without alcohol, consider getting treatment. Millions of adults suffer from substance use disorder but never receive the treatment they need. Professional help can assist you in understanding why you use alcohol or drugs to cope and give you techniques for overcoming those triggers.
