A Look at the States with the Toughest Drunk Driving Laws
Drunk driving poses serious risks not only to the driver but also to everyone else on the road. Too many alcohol-related fatalities have resulted in tough legislation across the country for driving under the influence. One of the states that tops the list for the strictest drunk driving laws is Arizona. Arizona was the first state to require installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) on a first offense. In addition to having to install an IID, you could also face mandatory jail time, a $250 base fine and license suspension.
Most states have the following base requirements if you are convicted of driving under the influence:
- License suspension or restriction
- Fines
- Alcohol education program
- Summary (informal) probation
Some states (like Arizona) require significantly more, even on a first offense. Florida is another state with strict laws for drunk driving. According to Florida statute, on a first conviction of driving under the influence, a person is required to pay a fine of at least $500. You can also be ordered to install an IID, required to complete community service and a substance abuse course. Other states have exceedingly high fines or long license suspensions. Driving under the influence has serious consequences. Even if nobody is injured, you could still lose your driving privileges, and your freedom.
Drinking and driving affects everyone. Heavy alcohol consumption puts you at a greater risk of harming yourself or others. It simply isn’t worth the risk.
