The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a number of resources for addicts and their families.  Alcohol and drug use disorders are rarely singular issues.  They are often complex matters that may involve mental health concerns, genetics and a predisposition to addiction.  Helping family members that may be suffering from drug or alcohol addiction begins with education.  Educating yourself and loved ones on substance abuse treatment and the options available is the best way to help a loved one.  Recovery does not happen overnight.  It can take years or even a lifetime to maintain sobriety.

A strong support system can be a crucial component of the recovery process.  Many people in drug or alcohol addiction treatment report that their success had a large part to do with their support system both their family and friends and the recovery care team.  If you believe that a loved one is suffering from substance use disorder, it is important to know that there are treatment options and resources available.
