Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Awarded Grant

In an Effort to Reduce Impaired Driving, SADD Awarded $270k Grant

The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has announced that Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) will receive a $270,869 grant. Thousands of people are killed each year by drunk drivers. SADD helps to increase awareness among young adults about the dangers of driving impaired.

The grant is paid for through money received by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grant will be used by SADD to hold several events to educate the public. The campaign will include “community outreach, social media, and research about impaired driving.

SADD previously held successful outreach campaigns such as “Rock the Belt” and “Is it Worth the Risk” which helped to engage students throughout the community. SADD hopes to add more chapters to high schools throughout the state. Research has proven that the “peer-to-peer approach” is extremely effective.

The grant can be used through September 30, 2021, to fund activities and outreach programs. Undoubtedly, social media has played an increasingly important role and will continue to throughout the year. While the pandemic has lessened the number of people on the road, there are still a large number of fatal traffic accidents each year.

The ABC has awarded several grants to organizations dedicated to reducing the number of people killed by drunk drivers. The Department of Alcohol Beverage Control is responsible for alcohol licensing, education, and enforcement in the State. They are dedicated to promoting programs that “prevent alcohol-related harm, and save lives.”
