Studies Show Increase in Alcohol Use Disorder for Millennials

Pandemic Takes Toll on Millennial Health

 

 A new study from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association reported on by Benefits Pro shows that millennials’ health has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the study, over the past year, there has been a 7 percent increase in alcohol use disorder and a 12 percent increase in major depression.

 

Millennials seem to have been hit harder than other generations by the pandemic. The report shows that 92 percent of millennials reported that they have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

 

Behavioral Health Conditions in Millennials

 

Behavioral health conditions which not only saw an increase in the past year but also from 2017-2018. Behavioral health conditions reported on include:

 

  • ADHD
  • Tobacco Use Disorder
  • Major Depression
  • Substance Use Disorder
  • Alcohol Use Disorder

 

Psychotic disorders did not have a notable increase from 2017 to 2018 but did see a 26 percent change between 2014 and 2018.

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder

 

Alcohol use disorder is believed to result in 10 years of healthy life lost. Despite millions of people having diagnosable alcohol use disorder, only a small portion seek treatment. Alcohol use disorder is treatable along with alcohol dependence and addiction. It is important to seek treatment immediately if you develop an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
