The Deadly Facts Behind Alcohol and Summer Fun

Summer is in full swing.  With July 4 festivities behind us, we now look forward to the remaining weeks until Fall cool down.  The last weeks of summer are usually some of the hottest of the year meaning more festivities centered around swimming pools, lakes and beautiful beaches.  Unfortunately, too many people mix drinking with these events and end up in dangerous situations.

According to a recent publication by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “up to 70% of water recreation deaths of teens and adults involve the use of alcohol.”  Alcohol can impair a person’s judgment.  When near water or operating a boat, impaired judgment can lead to a deadly accident.

Because summer activities usually begin in the heat of the day and last into the evenings, you may be unaware of the potential for dehydration or even of the amount of alcohol you are consuming.  It is imperative that you drink water and seek non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day.  Staying hydrated can save your life in the pool, at the beach and in a number of other circumstances.

Summer safety starts with awareness about the dangers of heavy alcohol consumption and binge drinking.  Heavy drinking can have immediate consequences to your health including loss of consciousness, alcohol poisoning, vomiting, stroke or even death.  It simply isn’t worth the risk.  Summertime sees a vast increase in the number of alcohol-related injuries and deaths on the water and on the roads.  It is important to be vigilant and never get behind the wheel of a car or boat if you have been drinking.  Make sure the driver is sober and keep others safe by promoting alcohol-free festivities.
